Before you read the next line, check your shoulders.
Not dramatically. Just notice them.
Are they somewhere near your ears? Pulled forward? Held very still? Uneven? Already dropping because I mentioned them?
That last one is interesting. Sometimes the body changes the moment attention reaches it. You can go half a day without thinking about your shoulders, then someone says shoulders and suddenly you realise they've been quietly carrying the whole afternoon.
We talk about stress like it lives in the mind. But sometimes it looks like this: a shoulder lifted during an email, a neck getting shorter in traffic, arms pulling inward when you're concentrating, a whole upper body preparing for something that never actually happens.
And then there's the opposite. That moment when you laugh properly and your shoulders fall. When you hear good news. When you lean back after finishing something. When the room feels easy enough that your body takes up a little more space without asking permission.
The shoulders are surprisingly expressive for something we mostly ignore. They brace. They protect. They shrink. They widen. They carry bags, expectations, tension, posture, habit, and sometimes absolutely nothing at all except the way you've been sitting for twenty minutes.
That's why I don't think every tight shoulder needs a story. But it can still be useful to notice the difference between this is just how I'm sitting and oh, I've been holding myself like this all day.
One way to tell: does it ease on its own once you notice it, or does it stay exactly the same no matter how long you look at it? Tension that's just posture tends to loosen the moment you pay attention to it, the same way your shoulders may have already dropped earlier in this note. Tension that's been building all day usually doesn't move just because you noticed it.
Try this without fixing anything
Notice your shoulders again. Don't pull them down. Don't roll them back. Don't correct your posture. Just let your arms hang a little heavier for one breath.
Then ask: If my shoulders didn't have to help me right now, what would they do?
That's the fun of noticing. You don't always find a problem. Sometimes you just meet a part of yourself you hadn't checked in on all day.
