Before You Know Why

Have you ever heard a song for the first time and known within three seconds that you loved it?

Not because you had analysed the production. Not because the lyrics had revealed themselves. Your body just went: yes.

A tiny lift in the chest. A smile before you meant to smile. Your foot moving. Your shoulders dropping. Something leaning toward it.

And only afterwards does the mind arrive with its explanation: I like the bass. It reminds me of somewhere. Her voice is beautiful. This feels familiar.

We talk a lot about the body reacting to stress. I'm more interested in how often it reacts to aliveness.

You walk into a room and immediately want to stay. You meet someone and conversation feels strangely easy. You see a colour and want it near you. You hear a rhythm and your hips answer before you've even registered the beat. You step outside after rain and suddenly take a deeper breath.

None of these moments need to mean anything enormous. That's what makes them interesting.

The body is constantly moving toward and away from things in tiny ways. Opening. Pausing. Leaning. Softening. Brightening.

We usually notice the dramatic signals. Maybe it's worth getting better at noticing the pleasant ones too.

Catch the yes

Sometime today, notice one thing your body likes before you explain why.

Don't improve the moment. Don't turn it into a practice. Just catch the first little yes. Then stay there for one extra second. What changed?

Maybe pleasure isn't always something we have to create. Sometimes it's already happening. We just move past it too quickly to notice.
